My grandfather Edward a Vandersteen as you know was born illegitimately, his mother did not keep him. He was brought up by the midwife Mrs Freeman. She did not legally adopt him. My grandfather kept the name Freeman. He only changed it legally when he travelled to USA in the 1970's.

He was not told anything about his mother or the Vandersteen's.

With regard to the illegitimate child, my father told me about it in a
rather tongue in cheek way, as follows: "Aunt Lily and Aunt Rose were
identical twins. Aunt Lily married a sea captain. One day the sea captain
came home and because the two women were identical he got into bed with the wrong twin and consequently my Dad's Grandfather went looking for the sea captain with a shotgun"
