CONT 2 CONT ANOTHER DREADFUL FIRE IN THE CITY.- 2 CONT TWO LIVES LOST. 2 CONT 2 CONT Another dreadful fire involving, we regret to add, a melan- 2 CONT choly loss of human life occurred yesterday morning in 2 CONT   Milton-street, Cripplegate, in the Jacob's Well public-house, 2 CONT so celebrated for its meetings in reference to trial by jury and 2 CONT other political questions. The Jacob's Well is situate on the 2 CONT east side of the street, at the corner of Phillipa's-court, nearly 2 CONT opposite the late City Theatre. The premises consisted of a 2 CONT brick building three stories high, in the occupation of Mr. 2 CONT William Vandersteen, a young man 24 years of age, the son 2 CONT of Mr. Vandersteen, landlord of the Frying Pan public-house, 2 CONT in Brick-lane, Spitalfields. The fire was first discovered about 2 CONT 25 minutes to 2 oclock, by city police constable Casson, No. 2 CONT 11, who was on duty in the neighbourhood. The constable 2 CONT was passing along the street, when he had his attention 2 CONT directed by some passers by to a great glare of light which 2 CONT was observable through the fanlight over the shop door of 2 CONT the public-house in question. Being convinced that it was 2 CONT not such a light as would be produced by mere gas, Casson 2 CONT knocked at the door with his staff, there being neither 2 CONT knocker nor bell, and had scarcely done so before a loud crash 2 CONT of the breaking of glass was heard, apparently in the rear of 2 CONT the premises. The constable and other persons who had 2 CONT assembled rushed up Phillipa's-court where a good view of 2 CONT the back of the premises could be obtained, when it was 2 CONT placed beyond a doubt that the house was on fire. The 2 CONT flames were issuing from a large sky1ight over the parlour, 2 CONT which is attached to the back of the house, but only one story 2 CONT high. The police constable instantly gave an alarm throughout 2 CONT the neighbourhood, which is one of the most densely popu- 2 CONT lated in the city. Within five or six minutes after the alarm 2 CONT was raised a party of the city police, from the Cripplegate sta- 2 CONT tion-house, arrived; up to which time none of the inmates of 2 CONT the Jacob's Well had made their appearance, and serious fears 2 CONT were entertained for their safety, as the flames were gaining 2 CONT a rapid ascendancy in front as well as at the back part of the 2 CONT premises. The police broke open the front doors of the shop, 2 CONT when the fire was discovered raging from the bar backwards. 2 CONT After the expiration of about ten minutes a boy was observed 2 CONT to escape out of the front garret widow, and crawl along 2 CONT the parapet that of the adjoining house, which was several 2 CONT feet lower. He, however, succeeded in reaching by jump- 2 CONT ing at the risk of his life, and, although in his night clothes 2 CONT and having nothing whatever on his feet, thus managed to 2 CONT effect his escape. Immediately after the figure of a man, which 2 CONT subsequently proved to be Mr. Vandersteen, was observed 2 CONT standing on the very point of the roof, and in a very dangerous 2 CONT situation, he being prevented from gaining the roof of the 2 CONT adjoining house by a large stack of chimneys on either side. 2 CONT By this time not less than from 300 to 400 people had col- 2 CONT lected near the spot, and the various shouts raised to the un- 2 CONT fortunate man in his perilous situation were true1y appalling. 2 CONT Ultimately some short ladders were procured from the work- 2 CONT shops of Mr. Mackenzie, builder, in Star-court, and conveyed 2 CONT to the parapet of the house, which was some feet below the 2 CONT edge of the slanting roof. They placed one of the ladders on 2 CONT the roof, near the place where Mr. Vandersteen stood, and held 2 CONT it from the parapet whilst he descended. It being sup- 2 CONT posed that all the inmates had been got out, Mr.Vandersteen 2 CONT from his extreme state of excitement being unable to afford 2 CONT any information, the engine from the brigade station in 2 CONT Whitecross-street was set to work, a good supply of water 2 CONT being obtained from the plugs in the neighbourhood. To get 2 CONT at the back, where the fire was raging with the greatest fury, 2 CONT the brigademen were compelled to carry the hose up Phillipa's- 2 CONT court, in which the houses are composed chiefly of wood, and 2 CONT one of which was igniting from the great heat. By the ex- 2 CONT ertions of the firemen they were saved, but the inmates, who 2 CONT are poor persons, sustained much damage by removing their 2 CONT furniture to a place of safety. Mr.Braidwood, the superin- 2 CONT tedent of the Fire Brigade, arrived about 20 minutes after 2 CONT the first alarm was given with the large engine and a body of 2 CONT men from the chief station in Watling-street, and it was 2 CONT speedily put in operation. The engines from the stations in 2 CONT Farringdon-street and Wellclose and Jeffery-squares, and that 2 CONT from the West of England, soon followed, and by half-past 3 2 CONT o'clock the fire was entirely got under. The damage done to 2 CONT the premises is not so great as might he imagined. The back 2 CONT part of the house, together with a portion of the roof, is con- 2 CONT sumed, and the front is much burnt but most of the floors 2 CONT are partially standing. On the building being sufficiently 2 CONT cooled, the firemen were directed to make a rigid search of 2 CONT premises, it having been rumoured that human life had 2 CONT been sacrificed. On entering the second floor front room they 2 CONT found it but slightly injured by the flames, but they were ter- 2 CONT ror-struck on the discovery of the body of a young female 2 CONT lying enveloped in a sheet, with her head and a part of her 2 CONT body on the flooring, and her feet resting on the edge of the 2 CONT bed. She was perfectly lifeless, and had evidently met her 2 CONT death by suffocation, the body not being burnt in the 2 CONT slightest degree. She was in her night-dress, and proves 2 CONT to be Jane Gross, aged 18, the barmaid. 2 CONT On further search, the firemen discovered lying entangled 2 CONT amongst the burnt rafters of the back garret a mass of burnt 2 CONT flesh, which proved to be the remains of another human 2 CONT being, but so awfully destroyed as to render any further re- 2 CONT cognition imperceptible. These remains during yesterday 2 CONT morning were ascertained to be those of Thomas Newman, a 2 CONT lodger in Mr. Vandersteen's house, who was about 43 years of 2 CONT age, and who held some situation in the London Docks. 2 CONT These remains, and the body of the unfortunate barmaid were 2 CONT placed in shells and removed to the bonehouse of Cripple- 2 CONT gate parish, in Fore-street, where they await a coroner's in- 2 CONT quest. 2 CONT On instituting inquiries as to the origin of the fire, it was 2 CONT ascertained from Mr. Vandersteen that he closed his house at 2 CONT 12 o'clock on Saturday night. The deceased female went to 2 CONT bed at that time, and he and Newman both went up stairs at 2 CONT the same time to go to bed, leaving, as he thought, everything 2 CONT safe below. He slept in the front room on the second floor, 2 CONT where the barmaid was found, but she slept in the back room 2 CONT on the same floor. Newman slept in the back attic, and the 2 CONT potboy in the front. He was awoke by the barking of his 2 CONT dog below, and thinking there were thieves in the house he 2 CONT jumped up and called "Jane, Jane, there are thieves in the 2 CONT house;" she came out of her room, and they met on the land- 2 CONT ing together, when they discovered the fire rising towards 2 CONT them. She fainted, and he endeavoured to carry her up- 2 CONT stairs, but in doing so they fell together. The smoke became 2 CONT so overpowering that he was obliged to fly for his own life, and  2 CONT gained the roof. It was his opinion that she must have rallied 2 CONT and crawled into his room with a view of escaping by the front 2 CONT windows, when she became overpowered. He could in no way 2 CONT account for the origin of the fire, as he put the gas carefully 2 CONT out himself. The body of the poor man (Newman was found 2 CONT near the door of the room.
